Fight against Viruses and Spyware at nil costFor those users who don't need to create a high-security zone for their computer machines, decent cost-free security software is available. Matthias Gaertner, spokesman for the German Federal Agency for Security in Information Technology (BSI) says that there are scores of no-cost tools for private use which range from virus protection and personal firewalls to deletion and encryption programs and data backup and anti-phone dialing software. It only takes a little effort for the user to achieve sufficient cost-free software protection on their machines.Olaf Pursche, security expert for Hamburg-based magazine Computerbild warns against simply installing random software on your machine. Anti-spyware tools sometimes fail to recognize new pests. Matthias Gaertner also warns about being too liberal with free programs. Another major problem is that some questionable internet sites purport to offer security programs that actually contain spy ware, viruses or Trojans. The BSI also provides security software and tools on its website. Matthias Gaertner recommends using software in your own language. Users are therefore advised to take the time to learn their security software and configure it properly. When selecting protective software for machines, users should try to whittle it down to just a few programs. It is recommended to combine antivirus software, a firewall and an anti-spyware program. Computer novices should definitely consider installing a complete all-in-one security package. Unlike many free programs, these security suites, as they are known, can be operated and configured using a unified program interface. The programs contained within are also designed to work with one another. Cost-free security tools are often financed through advertising. For this one needs to look at the details of how the programs are financed. In many cases the software developers have extra products left over. Another category of free software is known as personal editions. These are offered by the manufacturers of more expensive security tools. They are generally frills-free but functional versions. The cost-free programs are economic. Matthias Gaertner claims that once users get used to working with a program, they may well reach for the one they know when it comes time to actually buy something. |
