Spy ware and ad ware often get installed without the user's knowledge. Some send information about a user's surfing habits to ad companies, which then target the user with pop-up ads that fit that user's preferences.

Spy ware scanners are designed to detect a multitude of spy ware, ad ware, Trojan horses, key loggers, and track ware components. The scanning process only takes a fraction of a second and tells how to uninstall the invasive spy ware.

Spy ware scanners are also available as an ActiveX applet. After a short delay in which the browser downloads the applet, the user receives a message requesting permission for the scanner to run. When that is granted, the applet scans the system. The user is alerted if any spy ware is found and asked if the user wants to remove it. If no spy ware is found, the scanner disappears on its own.

Spy ware scanners can also perform cookie and history cleaning, hijacker protection, and real-time spy ware and ad ware protection. Certain spy ware scanners are built with the intelligence to distinguish legitimate Pop-ups (banking sites, e-mail, etc.) from annoying Pop-up Ads. Some Spy ware scanners also or puts you in contact with the spy ware developer for the most up-to-date and safe uninstall instructions.
