Key logger software is used to capture the user's keystrokes. Such software offer the ability to record emails, websites, documents, chats, instant messages, usernames, and passwords. Each time anyone - other than the legitimate user - uses a computer and types anything, key logger software running in the background saves the keystrokes to a file. The idea is to have the genuine user come back later and look at the results.

Apart from catching all keystrokes, these have advanced capabilities of capturing the screen, logging the programs being run and closed, monitoring the clipboard contents.
